Sona Tatoyan is a first generation Syrian-Armenian-American stage and film actor with bases in Berlin, LA, Aleppo and Yerevan.
Ms. Tatoyan is a graduate of the William Esper Studio in NYC where she studied with the legendary Bill Esper himself. Other training includes a BA in Theatre from Wake Forest University, Shakespeare and Company’s Summer Training Institute, and, yes, training as a pole dancer (at S Factor, NY and LA). She speaks English, Armenian, and some French and Spanish, received her Yoga Teaching Certification in Goa, India and holds a second degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do.
An accomplished stage actress, Ms. Tatoyan was featured in the world premieres of José Rivera’s BRAINPEOPLE at The American Conservatory Theater, MASSACRE(Sing to your Children) at The Goodman Theater, and BOLEROS FOR THE DISENCHANTED, 2008 winner Outstanding Ensemble Connecticut Critics Awards, at Yale Repertory Theater, among others.
Ms. Tatoyan’s feature film debut was the lead role in The Journey (2002) – the first American independent film ever shot in Armenia. The Journey won the Audience Award at the Milan International Film Festival in 2002.
Alongside Isaac Saboohi Ms. Tatoyan co-created the event 1001 Nights, a celebration of Middle Eastern music, movement, storytelling and food, twice produced in LA in 2021. Upcoming: Armenia Summer 2024. Ms. Tatoyan created and produced Azad storytelling through her non profit Hakawati. First iteration performances were in April 2022 at the Pico Playhouse in Los Angeles, followed by solo iterations in Boston and at the Pergamon musuem in Berlin September 2023.
Alongside two time Obie award winning theatre artist Jared Mezzocchi, Ms. Tatoyan created the multimedia iteration of Azad entitled Azad(the rabbit and the wolf), which has received development support from The Vineayard theater in NYC January of 2023, followed by the inaugural University of Connecticut Global Affairs Digital Media residency May 2023, Harvard artlab residency September 2023, Wake Forest University Character and Leadership residency January/Febraury 2024. Upcoming: MIT theater residency September 2024.
